What Is Fiber-to-the-Premise? (FTTP)
FTTP is the building of a fiber optic line/network to your home or business.
Development Of FTTP
As the telecommunications industry progresses, the use for fiber optic
cable is continually increasing. Fiber optic cable was first developed to
transmit large amounts of data over long distances and to be more cost
effective than the traditional copper lines. As fiber technology improves,
cost of deployment decreases, and the demand for more services
continues to grow allowing fiber to be deployed closer and closer to the end user.
Meeting Today's Needs And Anticipating The Future
FTTP enables ETC to offer the consumer a variety of communication and
entertainment services such as data (high speed Internet), voice (local
telephone) and video (cable television). All of these services are offered
via a single optical fiber to the home or business. FTTP has more
bandwidth capacity than copper or coaxial-based technologies which,
results in a more reliable connection and the ability to easily adapt to the
technology needs of the future.
How FTTP Works
The fiber is deployed to the home/business by an aerial or underground
drop. Once the fiber reaches the premises it is then connected to the
Network Interface Device (NID). The NID is placed on the side of the
home/business and can replace all other telephone and video TV service
boxes. The NID converts the signal to either data, voice, or video which, is
then distributed throughout the home/business. A power supply is then
placed within the home/business to provide reliable and
continuous service.
Advantages of FTTP
FTTP offers "triple play" ability; data, voice and video all consolidated on
one bill. It utilizes only one service box on the side of the home/business.
FTTP also provides virtually unlimited bandwidth for future needs, and
the ability to easily adapt to the technology needs of the future.
No modem required!
Installation is easy and hassle free. Your computer must be equipped
with a Network Interface Card (NIC)/Ethernet card prior to installation.
What To Look For In The Future With FTTP
FTTP has the ability to adapt to futuristic technology trends such as:
- Video and Voice over IP (allows you to make a phone call or watch television using the Internet as the source of transmission)
- Interactive gaming
- Educational services like video libraries, video classrooms and distance learning
- Motion picture quality videoconferencing
- With FTTP you're wired for the future!
